Which HPA Engine is Best for You?
Choosing the right HPA engine for your needs can be overwhelming. With so many options available today, you might need help determining which is best for you. We have put together this handy guide to help pick the most suitable HPA engine for your airsoft needs!
What is HPA?
HPA (High-Pressure Air) systems run off compressed air tanks and regulators and are usually attached to the airsoft gun using an HPA line/hose (similar to paintball remotes). Airsoft guns that use HPA are highly adjustable and offer a more consistent FPS / Joule Rating. HPA guns are typically more expensive but require less maintenance than AEGs.

The Fusion Engine comes with a unique nozzle system that allows you to change to a variety of different size restricted nozzles. These nozzles allow you to operate in an fps range below 300 fps all the way over 550 fps by simply swapping out your nozzle and adjusting your psi to optimal levels. Nozzle colors range in restriction levels from: Green (The most restrictive), Gold, Blue, Black, Silver, Red, and Purple (The least restrictive). Just to note, barrel lengths greatly affect your overall FPS / Joule ratings. The longer the barrel, the higher the ratings. The Shorter, the lower the ratings. Length has a drastic affect.

HPA Adaptors / Magazine Taps
Although these are not HPA engines, we feel they are worth mentioning. In order to HPA your GBB (gas blowback) airsoft guns, you can tap your mags or run an adapter.
HPA Airsoft Magazine Taps
Previously Tapping a magazine required you to drill a hole into an existing GBB magazine, rethread the hole, and install an HPA tap. However, we make it easy by offering premade HPA valves that screw into existing GBB pistol magazines.
Our hpa valve tap allows you to connect your air tank and regulator to your magazine using a one of our Amped Lines. This is by far the least expensive route, as long as you are using one of our pre-existing valves and the threading matches. Popular valve tap brands are for WE / KJW, KWA, JAG Scatter Gun, and Tokyo Marui (TM). We offer a wide variety of taps from our own brand, TAPP Airsoft, and CQB Russian Taps.
Simply pick up a matching tap, unscrew your existing valve and add the new one. Then your magazine is able to accept your choice of line and regulator setup.
HPA Adapters
HPA Adaptors let you run your GBB guns off air and can also allow you to use a magazine from a different platform. For example, you can use the Monk Airsoft Hi-Capa to M4 adapter to HPA your gun and use M4 magazines on your hi-capa. Or you can use the Primary Airsoft or Tapp Glock/AAP-01 MP5 adapters to run an MP5 magazine. There are many different options available here at Amped and you can check them out here:
All of these options are great and will allow you to run a gas gun outdoors or as a primary and will prevent any issues that would arise because of extreme weather temperatures. HPA works extremely well at keeping your pressures consistent compared to CO2 and Green Gas, which are temperature dependent, unlike HPA.
If you are looking for a great starter combo that comes with everything you need to start with tapping your Pistol or Airsoft Gun to HPA, we offer the following SLP Starter kit. It comes complete with Line, Regulator, Tank, and your choice of accessories and HPA Taps.
Pros: Can use different magazines such as M4 or MP5 magazines. Does not require you to disconnect the HPA line to reload. Simply eject your adapter magazine and insert a new one!
Cons: More expensive than HPA Valve Taps, but offers much more variety and function.
Best for: Anyone that wants to HPA a gas airsoft gun and wants to add versatility.
Final Thoughts
Each of these HPA engines has something special to offer and choosing one depends on your airsoft needs and your budget.
The choice of which HPA engine is best for you depends on your preferences, playstyle, budget and compatibility. If you're new to airsoft or HPA, stick with a unit that's easier to use, budget friendly, or does not require additional tuning.
There are many more different HPA engines on the market today. Each one of them has its benefits and drawbacks. It is important to understand which HPA engine will work best for your needs.
